Arizona Teachers Walkout
June, 2018 Amelia Pinto On Thursday, May 3rd, thousands of teachers gathered in Phoenix, Arizona to protest school funding. After several days of marching outside of the City Hall, lawmakers held a 13-hour council meeting to come to the conclusion that advisors would be receiving a 20% increase in pay. However, teachers are complaining that lawmakers did not fully understand their request. “I did it for my kids. I did it because this is not good enough and we need to do more. We should be outraged because they are cheating our kids.” said Lupita Almanza, a second-grade teacher who was at the capital for 27 hours. |
War Over Who Owns Beautiful Altadena Slogan
May, 2018 Lucy Heffernan For 50 years the phrase ‘Beautiful Altadena’ has been printed on license plate frames, and it is now an easily recognizable slogan to Altadena locals. However, two stores both claim that they own this widely adored slogan. Hoopla and Webster’s Community Pharmacy both say that they own this phrase, and both sell several pieces of merchandise with this tagline. But which one really does own this special slogan? |
Has Amelia Earhart Finally Been Found?
April, 2018 Amelia Pinto When a recent study released by Professor Richard L. Jantz questioned the true location of Amelia Earhart’s famous disappearance, the mystery was unburied once again. Amelia Earhart, the 41-year-old pilot, known for being a beacon of bravery for female (and male) flyers, had just made her history-changing attempt to cross the Pacific Ocean when all communications were lost. For years, millions of scientists, pilots, and search and rescue teams have been addicted to recreating her disappearance and finding what really happened. |
The Ontario Rescue Center
April, 2018 Hailey Garcia Many pets do not have someone who takes care of them and loves them unconditionally. Some creatures don’t have a home to call their own, or it is not a place that is suitable for them. There are also people that adopt many different animals at the same time, thinking that they are helping the animals, when in reality they are hoarding the animals, keeping them in unfit environments. There are many places that are against people keeping animals in an unsafe place. One of these places is The Ontario Rescue. |
Net Neutrality: The Rule That Keeps the Internet Fair
April, 2018 Katie Evenfield In 2015, Tom Wheeler of the Federal Communications Commission voted for a set of regulations regarding control of the internet. The F.C.C. favored Net Neutrality, applying aspects of the Communications Act of 1934 and the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to the 21st century. Net Neutrality is what prevents Internet Service Providers like AT&T and Verizon from putting up paywalls for specific sites, or messing with the internet speed. Without this law in place, internet providers get to choose what you see. |
Mass Shootings
March, 2018 Katie Evenfield Since January 1, 2018, many school shootings, ranging in severity, have already taken place in the United States. Teenagers and young adults across the country are now leading the “March for Our Lives” movement and marches across the country in support of gun control. |
The #MeToo Movement
March, 2018 Amelia Pinto In an era of acceptance, there has never been a more perfect time for us to speak up. Us, as citizens, people, and family. Us, as victims, suppressors, and bystanders. Us, as human beings- regardless of gender. Us, as truth tellers, and as silence breakers. |
2018 Rose Bowl Parade
January, 2018 Amelia Pinto & Katie Evenfield As the one hundred and twelfth Rose Parade turns around the corner, we reflect on the process that has gone into making these gorgeous floats that showcase the agricultural beauty of our California (and all around the globe) flowers. The Rose Parade is famous worldwide, and a variety of diverse people come from all around the world to watch the procession. The 10,000 pounds of flowers brighten up the streets of Pasadena with color and light. In honor of all the amazing individuals and groups around the world that are changing our future, the parade theme was “Making a Difference”. |
LA Toy Drives
January, 2018 Hailey Garcia Many kids look forward to the Christmas holiday. They look forward to decorating the tree and baking Christmas cookies. But what people are most excited about is Santa Claus coming to town and them getting lots of presents. A lot of people write lists explaining what they want, and often they get what they want (as long as they have been good that year). But what about the kids whose families are not able to afford any Christmas presents? Let’s look at the different charities that give kids a chance to get what they have always wanted for Christmas. Dreamers: What Life in America Will Look Like for Young Immigrants in 2018
January, 2018 Amelia Pinto Maria Gabriela (Gaby) Pacheco came to the United States in 1993, when she was only eight years old. Her family arrived on a travel visa, and attempted to find a stable lifestyle, but was never at ease or completely grounded due to fear of deportation. As Gaby grew up, she became a significant figure in advocacy for immigrants that come to America as children. Gaby Pacheco was able to find a route of her own and a place in America, but thousands of immigrant families get taken back to their country or split up. Very few get a happy ending, and even if they do, like Gabby, they’re still fighting for their freedom. The Importance of Different Therapy Animals In Our Community
December, 2017 Lucy Coulter & Hailey Garcia Approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. Training animals to be a therapy animal is a great way of saving them from something that they don’t deserve. One interesting fact is that dogs can actually help teach children how to read. There are about ten types of species that are used as therapy animals. This includes birds, dogs, cats, some rodents, mini pigs, llamas, alpacas, horses, donkeys, and reptiles. We will be focusing on four of these amazingly talented creatures; rabbits, cats, dogs, and horses. |
Zero-Waste Life Style
December, 2017 Olivia Finley-Nockels When I first heard about zero waste, I imagined a world without plastic and harmful materials that could damage the planet. Going further into the topic, I discovered that there were many components to the zero waste lifestyle. I am very much a tree hugger in the sense of the word but zero waste seems almost impossible. Jane and Simple, a self-described eco-warrior, says yes, it is impossible to create zero waste. I wanted to learn not just why, but how to live by the zero waste lifestyle. |
Corvette Stingray vs. Z06
December, 2017 Jacob Hafar Most people will understand Corvette’s fame, that I hold to be true. Even if you’re not a car lover like I am, you might still have come to respect each car’s sleek, yet jagged look or the fact that they all have tremendous horsepower (At least for their time). But I’m here to tell you about one of their latest models, the Corvette Stingray Z06. |
